Mixed Netball and Tournaments

The Cath Askwith Netball Tournament 2017 Results
Unlike last year, the sun decided to stay tucked behind the clouds today but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the 20 teams who turned up to bless the Netherthorpe courts with their presence again.  The support, comradery, sportsmanship, laughter and netball spirit which graced the courts today would have had Cath smiling down on all of us, bursting with pride and admiration for every player, official, umpire and supporter that played a role in making the Cath Askwith tournament 2017 a roaring success.  With fierce competition through the round robin stages the teams jostled to secure a top 4 place and win themselves some silverware.  There were some sterling individual and team performances.  The final round of the ladies tournament had all eyes on Champs and Pumas, both unbeaten and battling it out for pole position.  Tired legs, aches and pains aside, the determined players brought their A game.  Champs began to pull away in the 2nd half and took victory in the end to earn them the title of tournament winners.  Congratulations to both teams. In the mixed tournament, The Bees were the only team to remain unbeaten all day meaning they too took the winners title – awesome stuff! The wonderful team white (albeit covered in coats, gloves & jumpers!) – our amazing umpires – were out in force and were their usual amazing selves, smiling and working from start to finish to ensure that everyone played safely and fairly.  Our thanks to every one of you.  They have had the onerous task of choosing players who stood out on court throughout the day.  In the all ladies competition player of the tournament was Hannah Calleja of team Zodiacs with a very commendable 7 nominations – congratulations Hannah.  In the mixed competition, we saw the return of an old friend.  Proving that he hasn’t lost his netball touch, our worthy winner Faizan, also with 7 nominations claimed the player of the tournament title – great to see you back Faiz!  To top the tournament off, we were extremely fortunate to welcome our guest of honour, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, to present our winners with their trophies.  The Kidney and Renal Care department is very close to her heart and she spent time there with Cath before she sadly passed away in June.  She was very proud to be invited to present our teams in remembrance of Cath and recognition of the work within the unit.  It seemed only fitting then that she should hand over the coveted ‘Spirit of Netball’ trophy to our very worthy winners – Mixed Team ‘Norfolks’ – chosen by the umpires for their spirit both on and off court, attitude to players and officials and all round sportsmanship – congratulations.

The final results of the round robin were: -

All that remains to be said is a huge thank you to each and every one of you.  You make the day what it is, no matter what your role is.  As we looked around today, it is truly inspirational to see the diverse mix of people who are taking part in our wonderful sport.  Netball is not just a sport, it’s a culture, a social network, an amazing game that brings all ages from babies (many of which were still in tummies today – either that or there were lots of stolen netballs!) to grandparents and everyone in between, mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives – we are privileged to be a part of this and to see these events and our leagues growing year on year.  We organised it and you all made it the fantastic day it became.  May all your aches and pains be small ones and we look forward to hosting you all again next year....Save the Date!

PS - We would like to add a special huge thaanks to Team Hurricanes who wanted to enter the All Ladies Tournament but to make sure we had enough Mixed teams they (due to our begging) joined the Mixed...we thank you - again 'In the Spirit'

PPS - Finally there is a Lord Mayor of Sheffield Facebook Page..with pictures and everything!
